Carolina Marín Dominates on Path to Seventh European Badminton Championship Title

Carolina Marín, six-time European badminton champion, embarked on the path to her seventh continental crown this Wednesday with a very comfortable victory, 21-6 and 21-7 in 23 minutes, over the Scottish Rachel Sugden, 176th in the world, in a day in which the other three Spaniards present in Saarbrücken (Germany) were eliminated: Clara Azurmendi, Pablo Abián and Luis Enrique Peñalver.

The Huelva player defended her status from the first point, with two streaks of five and seven points, but she did not let go and continued to increase the advantage until she took the set.

In the second game Sugden stayed close until 5-4, when Marín once again displayed his game and only allowed his rival to add three more points.

“A pretty good, comfortable match,” acknowledged the Spaniard after the clash. “It is true that the steering wheel is a little slow in this pavilion, but even so the sensations are good. We continue with it,” she added.

First seeded in the tournament and number five in the world ranking, Carolina Marín will play in the round of 16 against the Bulgarian Kalyona Nalbantova (84 in the world), executioner of the Hungarian Vivien Sandorhazi (83) by 21-17, 19-21 and 21 -13.

The Andalusian player, European champion in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022, has won her last two tournaments, the All England and the Swiss Open.
