BÁDMINTON | European Championship Saarbrücken 2024

Carolina Marín won her seventh title as European badminton champion this Sunday. The Huelva player won the final of the Saarbrücken 2024 continental tournament against the Scottish Kristy Gilmour by 21-11 and 21-18. One more gold in the Old Continent, eight if we add the seven mentioned to the one achieved in the European Games last year.

Carolina Marín did not give Gilmour a choice, an old acquaintance whom she already defeated in the European finals of 2016 (21-12 and 21-18), 2017 (21-14 and 21-12) and 2022 (21-10 and 21 -12).

In this final the Andalusian started with one more march, solid with her service and even more so with the rest to force Gilmour to adjust the impacts a lot. In fact, only once in the entire first set did he concede two serves in a row from his rival, when she went up 15-11. There were no more concessions on her part, as she not only failed to manage the advantage she had, but, with a run of 6-0, ended up winning 21-11.

The second round began more balanced, without the Huelva native being able to leave the benches with an advantage of more than three points (11-8). He moved within those margins until his opponent approached first after one of the best exchanges of the match (14-13) and took the lead later (17-18). There Carolina again became aggressive, which led to Gilmour leaving three shuttlecocks in a row on the net before giving up the first championship point against.

In this way, Carolina Marín enlarges her legend by adding the gold of Saarbrücken 2024 to those of Kazán 2014, La Roche-sur-Yon 2016, Kolding 2017, Huelva 2018, kyiv 2021, Madrid 2022. Without forgetting that the Huelva native won the title at the European Games in Tarnów 2023.

But Carolina Marín is not only the queen of European badminton, she is also a world legend: she is the only athlete to have won three world titles (2014, 2015 and 2018), golds to which we must add the silver in 2023. In addition, She is the only European to have won Olympic gold (Rio 2016).
