Carlos Herrera Explains Why He Broke Up with FC Barcelona: A Personal Account

Carlos Herrera, a journalist from Almeria living today in Seville, has never hidden his love for the green and white colors. The host of the successful radio program ‘Herrera en la COPE’ has confessed in various interviews that he was always a member of Barça and Betis, but that something happened that made him ‘break up’ with the Barça club.

His love for Barça comes from afar. His family moved to Catalonia when he was a child and he lived in Barcelona between the 50s and 60s. It was then that he discovered the Camp Nou, with the help of his uncle Pablo, as he himself has explained on some occasion: ” My uncle Pablo took me by the hand to see the Camp Nou one fateful afternoon in which the team tied with Sporting de Gijón. Or maybe they lost, I don’t remember well. It seemed to me that I was entering a temple about which I felt something. He said that I would never be able to separate myself. I followed Betis, but I lived in Barcelona, and as a teenager I would gather some bitches to go to the last row of the north stand and follow the city team between passion and frustration. They were not good times for euphoria. The detested Madrid won everything and until that flying Dutchman appeared (by Cruyff) things did not change. I already left for Seville, just in my twenties, and there I met the other half, with the team of art, with which he magnified any detail, with which he offered passion in all its expressions, with which he could lose, but without the tragic sense that accompanied other defeats in other areas of life. “I continued to be one of the two teams with stripes on the shirt: one that won titles and another that occasionally achieved some feat.”

But a few years ago something happened that made him ‘split pears’ with the Barcelona club. Everything was as a result of the ‘Procés’ in Catalonia. He explained it himself Herrera a Bertin Osborne in his program ‘Mi casa es la tuya’, in which the singer opened the doors of his estate to famous people and in which he did an extensive interview with them. “I am a Betic. I have been a Barcelona fan for many years as well, what happens is that as a result of Barça’s position with the Catalan independence movement, of which I am a fierce enemy, I said never again. And it has never been again. A shame.”

HE SAID IT IN 2019…

“I stopped wearing the Barça shirt. I wish them good luck, I don’t want them to lose nor do I wish them harm.”

“Is it striking that institutions of Catalan civil society essential for notable balances, such as Barça, for example, can be victims of disaffection in broad spaces as a consequence of having supported, first, criminals, convicted persons and, furthermore, joining in as they do the Guardiolas, Hernández and others to the actions of all this riffraff? Well, you see, but it is a club at the service of criminals,” he said then.
