Caen BC suffers disappointing defeat against Chartres: The nightmarish game that cost them home field advantage in playoffs

We knew that the evening of this Tuesday, April 16 could bring its share of disillusionment and regrets. We feared it, trying to convince ourselves that, conversely, the Palais des Caen-la-Mer was going to experience its first great sporting moment.

Ultimately, it was the worst scenario that unfolded. Visibly stunned by its defeat in Quimper (64-55), Caen BC started completely in reverse. The Palace, bubbling like never before, did not even succeed in waking him up.

A nightmarish first half

Coulibaly took his responsibilities from the start but the CBC was confronted with this chronic clumsiness which has characterized it for many weeks.

1/10 on shots and a 0-11 conceded: nightmarish start (5-17, 7′). After ten minutes, the poverty of the Caen start was even clearer: 2/16 on shots including 0/8 from three points and 4 from collective evaluation (11-23, 10′).

The offensive limits continued (17-33, 15′). The supposed leaders (Bernaoui, Rojewski, Davis Jr…) were in distress. We were not far from the rout (24-42, 20′), certainly in a performance unworthy of a credible candidate for promotion to Pro B (0/15 at three points in 20′).

“I have never seen this in seven years”, we whispered in the bays. Coulibaly continued to struggle and Caen BC finally responded. He tightened up his defense (34-49, 25′), before finally finding the right rhythm and skill. A buzzer beater from White brought the Palace to its feet and gave hope to an entire nation (50-58, 30′). An anthology “to arms” started the start of the fourth quarter.

The CBC responded to its audience with rediscovered exteriors (Blanc and Rojewski in particular). Chartres trembled but kept its composure in the final minutes. What the Caennais failed to do in the clutch moments of money-time (65-71, 27’30”; 68-73, 28′). What they ended up paying (73-77, 40′).

Hyères Toulon winner of Tours (92-77), even a victory would not have allowed it to move directly to Pro B. But the scenario is really hard to take since Caen BC finishes fourth in the upper group and is no longer guaranteed to have home field advantage until the semi-final of the playoffs…
