Caen Basket Calvados could have filled two Palais des Sports, this Tuesday, April 16, 2024, for the clash against Chartres. The 4,200 people forced to stay at home didn’t miss much, except in the second half. After sixteen victories in a row at home, the Caennais lost their last match of the second phase of Nationale 1 (73-77). The victory of Hyères-Toulon over Tours alleviates the regrets (92-77).

The Varois, who were assured of the title in the event of success, are promoted to Pro B. Caen will have to go through the playoffs to hope to obtain the second ticket to the higher level. This will not be an easy task considering the match played in front of Chartres, which snatched second place from the Cébécistes in the final ranking. Caen finishes fourth and will therefore no longer have home advantage from potential semi-finals.

A distressing first half

The Normans played only one half in this meeting. The first seemed like a long nightmare against a backdrop of immeasurable awkwardness. The Caennais had converted… 17% of their shots at the break. Worse, none of their fifteen three-point attempts hit the mark. The CBC was paralyzed, unable to bring the ball inside and create danger outside, terribly passive and, ultimately, frankly distressing.

After the good start of Bali Coulibaly, author of the five points scored by his team during the first seven minutes of play (5-17, 8′), the locals disappeared from the radar. They were dominated in all areas of the game, including rebounding. A ball stolen by Malela Mutuale revived an ounce of hope (15-23, 12′), very quickly extinguished by the very solid Chartrains. After 18 minutes of play, the visitors had scored twice as many points as the locals (19-38, 18′).

The CBC already cru

Caen defended little and only scored from a free throw. At least we could grant him the intelligence and aggressiveness necessary to make mistakes in a context of total shortage of skill. That wasn’t enough to be in the race. The CBC had only scored 24 small points and fell behind by 18 lengths at half-time (24-42, 20′).

If the third quarter initially seemed to follow this line, the Whites displayed better attitudes as the minutes passed. Led by a good Bali Coulibaly, they showed more combativeness. When Perfect Njiba finally unlocked the local three-point counter, the Palais des Sports began to dream. Yanik Blanc gave hope by hitting the buzzer (50-58, 30′). The atmosphere suddenly rose a few tones. Caen had made up ten points in this third quarter (26-16).

Chartres did not crack

So maybe… Yanik Blanc brought Caen back six lengths (53-59, 31′) in front of 4,200 standing spectators. But Chartres did not crack. The Euréliens, with infallible consistency, reconstituted a cushion of a good ten points (57-69, 35′). The Caennais then used their speed to stay alive, again, and fight until the end. After Yanik Blanc, Antoine Rojewski attacked the circle and made the mistake: five points behind two minutes from time (68-73).

The lack of address, however, was remembered by the Caennais. Malela Mutuale missed an open three-point shot, Antoine Rojewski was no more successful and despite a final winning shot from Perfect Njiba, Chartres could manage the money time quite calmly. His regularity logically won out. Caen will tackle the round of 16 of the playoffs on Friday April 26, 2024.
