Internal warning to BVB star

Borussia Dortmund collects three important points in the fight for the Champions League in Mönchengladbach. Despite a lot of rotation, BVB convinces with morale. Nevertheless, those responsible in Dortmund send clear words to an offensive star.

Karim Adeyemi did his team a disservice in the win against Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-1). After two completely unnecessary fouls, the offensive star saw yellow and red. BVB still saved their lead with great effort over time – a risky undertaking in the already very intense English weeks.

After Adeyemi was cautioned in stoppage time in the first half for a grab on Franck Honorat (45+4), the winger fouled again shortly after the break. During a Gladbach counterattack in the 55th minute of the game, the 22-year-old pulled Stefan Lainer, brought him down and was consequently sent off.

“We took Ian Maatsen off at half-time to avoid this situation. We also brought it up again because we experienced something similar in Hoffenheim,” complained BVB coach Edin Terzic and criticized: “He knows that it wasn’t the best action of the day.” After the final whistle, Adeyemi went straight to his teammates sorry, as Terzic reported.

BVB with a high level of wear and tear in the final spurt of the season

There is still a lot at stake for BVB this season. In the Champions League to reach the semi-finals (Tuesday, 9 p.m., SPORT1 live ticker) and in the Bundesliga to reach fourth place – the minimum goal for the premier class.

The wear and tear of strength cannot be wiped away anyway, despite the large rotation (six changes compared to the Atlético game). “It’s not always easy. But it’s our job,” said BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel when asked by SPORT1.

Playing outnumbered players for over 40 minutes isn’t likely to be helpful in the final stretch of the season.

Adeyemi’s dismissal is doubly bitter

“In the end it is difficult for a team when we play with ten people on such tight days. Karim knows about it. That shouldn’t happen to him again,” warned BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl.

Recently, Adeyemi’s form curve had shown an upward trend. The winger was an invigorating element in the BVB offensive. There was hardly any sign of his long compulsory break (torn syndesmosis ligament). This is one of the reasons why he was allowed to start from the start in the last four games in the Bundesliga and also in the Champions League against Atlético Madrid (1:2).

The sending off against Mönchengladbach is doubly bitter because Adeyemi will be missing from BVB for the next league game against Leverkusen.

And yet those responsible were able to gain something positive from the unpleasant phase. Kehl saw the team’s “great morale in these tight, violent and intense days.” Above all, Terzic emphasized that “despite all odds, we achieved this victory as a team.”

Despite, or perhaps because of, Adeyemi’s sending off, Dortmund have shown perseverance and unity – important factors in BVB’s final spurt to the season.
