BVB Legend Steffen Freund Urges Club to Extend Contracts for Mats Hummels and Marco Reus

The contracts of BVB grandees Mats Hummels and Marco Reus expire at the end of the season. If Steffen Freund has his way, Borussia Dortmund should definitely extend the veterans’ contract – although the Black and Yellow legend sees different roles for Hummels and Reus.

“So Hummels, without ifs and buts,” replied Freund in an interview with RTL/ntv and sport.de when asked whether BVB should give the defender a new contract.

In the Champions League quarter-finals against Atlético Madrid, Hummels “showed that he can still compete at the highest level at any time,” praised the 1996 European champion.

BVB knocked the favored Spaniards out of the premier class thanks to a 4-2 home win. In the second leg, Hummels formed a strong central defense with Nico Schlotterbeck for long stretches.

With ex-captain Reus, you have to “look at the overall situation,” said Freund, referring to the offensive star. “To what extent is he open to something new? Because with him it is clear that he is no longer first choice. And at the same time he has made such great contributions to the club.”

BVB: Giant as “Standby Professional”?

The 1996 European champion therefore suggested that BVB “perhaps involve Reus in a task” at the club. He cited Makoto Hasebe from Eintracht Frankfurt as an example.

Reus could remain a “standby professional” and “get a coaching license” or “train a team,” suggested Freund. “I would basically see that first, because you have to integrate him into the club.”

The 34-year-old Reus played for BVB in his youth and has been a professional since 2012. For Borussia he played 285 Bundesliga games, scored 118 goals and won the DFB Cup twice.

Hummels won the championship twice with BVB and returned to Dortmund in 2019 after a three-year stint with FC Bayern.
