Borussia Dortmund is in the semi-finals of the Champions League after a memorable game against Atletico Madrid. The game tipped over completely twice and was on a knife’s edge until the end. Then the Germans are redeemed.

It’s done. Borussia Dortmund has qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League and will face Paris Saint-Germain, who beat FC Barcelona. BVB won against Atletico Madrid 4:2 (2:0) and was able to make up for the 1:2 defeat in the first leg. It was an insane game that ended completely upside down twice.

At first the much better hosts looked like the sure winners when they went into the break with a deserved 2-0 lead after goals from Julian Brandt (34th) and Ian Maatsen (39th). There the Dortmunders briefly lost their faith and their courage. The Spaniards played much more offensively after the change and soon equalized.

First Mats Hummels scored an own goal (49th), then Angel Correa scored to make it 2-2 (64th). At this point, Madrid were in the semi-finals and given the developments, a 2:3 score was more likely than a Dortmund goal. But there wasn’t just one, but two. First Niklas Füllkrug put a header into the net (71′), and three minutes later Marcel Sabitzer scored with a shot into the right corner.

First semi-final since 2013

Dortmund took this lead to the cheers of 81,365 enthusiastic spectators on a memorable European Cup evening.

If you’re in the semi-finals, then it’s just one more step, but a very difficult step.” Paris had lost the first leg against FC Barcelona 2:3, but clearly won the second leg 4:1. Both teams had already met in the group stage.
