Bundesliga Softball Season Opens with Dominant Performances

Last Saturday, April 14th, the 2024 Softball Bundesliga season officially opened with four doubleheaders.

At their season opener, the Cologne Cardinals welcomed the German champions to Wesseling. The Vermins showed very clearly in both games that they started the season with title ambitions this year too. The home team fell behind early in the first game, but was able to keep it down for a long time. In the last inning, the Vermins offense got going again and started a 10-point rally to make the final score 15-0. Wesseling dominated the second game from the start and won again 15-0 after four innings.

The runner-up from Bonn welcomed the Neunkirchen Nightmares to their home ballpark in the Rheinaue. The Capitals softball players left the field as clear winners in both games. In the first game, the guests were unable to score any runs and ended up losing 11-0. In the second game, the Nightmares briefly took a 3-2 lead after the 1st inning. But in the following inning the Capitals took the upper hand with two more points and secured the eventual 11:4 victory with five runs in the 4th inning.

Parallel to the remarkable success of the Bundesliga baseball players in Heidenheim, the Stuttgart softball players also showed a strong performance against the Cougars who had traveled there. The Reds opened the new season in their home ballpark with two clear victories – 8:1 and 10:0. In the second game, the guests from Karlsruhe were unable to score a hit and only got on base through a walk, catcher’s interference, hit-by-pitch and fielder’s choice.

In the fourth encounter on matchday 1, the Mannheim Tornados hosted the Tübingen Hawks. The home team won both games with 9:4 and 12:0. The Hawks clearly had problems in the second game against Tornados pitcher Cortney Miles. No runs, no hits and 6 strikeouts in 4 innings. Only through a walk and fielder’s choice did two players briefly get on base in the last inning.

The next games in the Softball Bundesliga will take place on April 20th and 21st. The Ratingen Goose-Necks will host the Bonn Capitals (Saturday, 12:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.) and the Freising Grizzlies will host the Stuttgart Reds (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.). For the Guggenberg Legionnaires, the Bundesliga season begins away at the Tübingen Hawks (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.).
