Well, which one? Everything was ready for Bayer Leverkusen to achieve something historic on matchday 29: winning the first German championship in the club’s perhaps not long, but runner-up, Bundesliga history. Bayern and Stuttgart had kindly completed their games victoriously, and so Xabi Alonso’s team was able to let off steam once again against Werder Bremen: Sunday weather, the otherwise rather sober BayArena enveloped in anticipation, ecstasy of victory, disbelief and a red mist of happiness Smoke pots gurgling away – and in the end five goals, three of which were scored by the 20-year-old face of success, Florian Wirtz. It’s fitting for this season of Leverkusen’s dominance that Bayer are probably the only team in league history to deliver their decisive masterpiece in just 89 minutes. Because the fans flooded the pitch after the 5-0 win, referee Harm Osmers simply called off the game early.
