In a football-packed week, FC Heidenheim had all eyes on them with an impressive performance against FC Bayern. Under the leadership of Heidenheim native and long-time club coach Frank Schmidt, they defeated the Munich giants, whose repeated stumbles continue to attract attention. Heidenheim’s league partner Darmstadt, however, couldn’t keep up and lost 4-0 to Mainz. BVB fell back to fifth place, while Leverkusen built up a big lead of 16 points on the way to an early championship thanks to an easy 1-0 win against Union Berlin and a simultaneous defeat by Bayern. In the relegation battle, 1. FC Köln won the game against VfL Bochum thanks to two late goals and Liverpool FC lost their lead in the Premier League with a 2-2 draw against Manchester United. A racist incident led to the cancellation of Schalke 04’s U15 game at Alemannia Aachen.

Heidenheim against Bayern. It’s like so often after Bayern’s defeats: everyone only talks about the stumbling, embarrassing megastars. The victorious opponents tend to come up short. Seldom has anyone deserved more homage than the newcomer from Heidenheim an der Brenz, a club full of – yes! – Superlatives: The smallest stadium in the league is in Heidenheim. Because of its proximity to a well-known plush toy manufacturer, Heidenheim has the only mascot with a button in its ear. And the actual mascot is on the sidelines in Heidenheim, Frank Schmidt, who was born in the city, used to play for the club and has been training it since 2007, initially in the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga, while a certain Ottmar Hitzfeld looked after FC Bayern. Schmidt is the author of the fairy tale of the Ostalb. He was injured while celebrating a goal against Bayern. “But it’s a nice feeling to finally have a torn muscle fiber again, I think,” he said.
