Leverkusen’s Jonas Hofmann played a crucial role in Bayer’s victory against West Ham. The 31-year-old has one wish for the weekend.

Bayer Leverkusen’s offensive man Jonas Hofmann doesn’t want to become German champion on the sofa and perfect the title with the team itself.

“I hope we can decide for ourselves,” said Hofmann, looking ahead to the upcoming Bundesliga weekend. If FC Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart lose on Saturday, Leverkusen would no longer be able to take away the first championship in the club’s history before their own game against Werder Bremen on Sunday. If at least one of the two competitors wins, Bayer can crown itself with a victory of its own.

“Especially when you can become German champion for the first time, you don’t want to do that at home on the couch with a glass of water the day before you play,” said Hofmann. “You can’t let your emotions out if you’re not with the group you did it with.”

Looking ahead to the home game against Werder, the 31-year-old, who scored Leverkusen’s first goal in the 2-0 win in the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League against West Ham United, said: “Now we’re lucky that everything is set up perfectly for Sunday. It’s just nicer when you’re with the group. That’s why I keep my fingers crossed for Bayern and Stuttgart.” FCB welcomes 1. FC Köln, Stuttgart hosts Eintracht Frankfurt.
