NEW YORK — Jordi Fernandez has been hired as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, who will try to rebound after missing the NBA playoffs for the first time in six years.
The Nets finished the campaign with a 32-50 record and fired head coach Jacque Vaughn at the All-Star break. Kevin Ollie concluded the campaign in the role of interim head coach.

Fernandez spent the last two seasons as an associate coach with the Sacramento Kings, last year leading them to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
Fernandez, who is originally from Badalona, Spain, also leads the Canadian men’s basketball team. He also led the country to bronze at the Basketball World Cup last year.
Canada also qualified for the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
The Nets made the playoffs from 2019 to 2023, but displayed no stability at the head coaching position during that time. After Kenny Atkinson was replaced during the 2019-20 season, Canadian Steve Nash and Vaughn had short stints at the helm of the New York team. Vaughn and Ollie also held the position on an interim basis.
The Nets hope that Fernandez, the 24th coach in franchise history, will stay on the job for a long time.
