Brave Walheim Women Fight Hard Against Bundesliga Champions Bottrop

Bottrop is simply not the standard by which the first division judokas from Hertha Walheim have to be measured. In the well-filled hall of the Inda-Gymnasium, the “Schmiede Girls” lost the double match 4:10. The Hertha team scored 37 points, while Bottrop scored 94. This is anything but embarrassing, because Bottrop will probably become champions of the Bundesliga, North-West season. And you can definitely lose out against him.

But it’s not just this fact that makes the brave Walheim women proud. Some fighters were unable to compete due to other (sporting) commitments and injuries. The two trainers Hannah Brankers and Jürgen Dominick had been calling around for days to get a squad that wouldn’t be sloppy. In the end they even managed an intermediate score of 4:5. After the first round of seven went to the Bottrop team 5-2, Walheim caught up again and came close. But that was it. Because the final five fights from the second half of the season all went to the overall winner.

It didn’t start badly at all: The 63 athlete Joni Geilen won her fight after just a minute and got the first point for the hosts. Heavyweights Lucia Erdorf and Jenny Klaus (-70 kg) then lost until the Hertha women secured their second individual victory. Melissa Loen (-78 kg) beat Leonie Beyersdorf from Bottrop in the tenth second of extra time. Anyway. However, there was nothing left for Fabienne Binder, Julia Fügen and Kim Sarah Czichy to do in the order before the break.

As at the beginning of the fight day, the host team started the rematch with a victory. Once again it was Joni Geilen who, with her victory over Saskia Wüst, only needed a good minute of fighting time to secure her second success. This made the 63 athlete the most successful in the Brankers/Dominick team that evening. Heavyweight Paulien Sweers then brought the Walheim team up to 4:5 with her victory. The faint hopes of perhaps creating a 7:7 and thus a sensation quickly evaporated after the guests made an interim spurt.

There were no reasons for frustration for the two coaches. Jürgen Dominick said: “Hannah and I are very satisfied with the performances shown.” After all, some fights were “closer” than the final result suggested. Among other things, Dominick highlighted Jenny Klaus’ fight. “Jenny fought against the very strong Dutchwoman Donja Vos for a total of twelve minutes and only narrowly lost in the end.” The coach also said that “unfortunately the number of failures for us was too high to seriously endanger this strong opponent.”

The Walheim women are looking forward to the third day of fighting. “In Witten we will come up with something on April 27th to look good again,” the Hertha coach sees this comparison as a way of determining where we stand.
