Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers: Naomi Osaka ‘would love to play’ at Paris Olympics after helping Japan win

Naomi Osaka says she “would love to play” at this summer’s Olympics Games in Paris after helping Japan reach the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup.

Osaka won against Yulia Putintseva as Japan beat Kazakhstan 3-1 to book a spot in November’s finals in Seville.

However, the former world number one may have to go through an appeals process if she is to compete in Paris.

She has not made the mandatory two appearances in the Billie Jean King Cup during the current Olympic cycle.

Osaka has risen from 831 to 193 in the world rankings since returning to action in January, nearly six months after giving birth to her daughter Shai.

The 26-year-old was a torch bearer at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, lighting the cauldron at the opening ceremony.

“Growing up watching the Olympics on TV, I felt that it was a celebration of sport,” the four-time Grand Slam champion said.

“If I do play, I have high ambitions of myself and I hope that I can do really well and get a medal.”

Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek helped ensure Poland joined Japan in the last eight of the Billie Jean King Cup.

The current world number one triumphed in straight sets against both Simona Waltert and Celine Naef as Poland defeated hosts Switzerland 4-1.

Slovakia are also through following a 4-1 win against Slovenia, while Australia cruised to a 4-0 victory against Mexico.
