Behind the Scenes of Postal Voting: A Look Inside the Ballot Counting Process

○… At 8:40 p.m. on the 10th, at the Deokjin Ballot Counting Center at the Jeonju Indoor Badminton Court in Deokjin Sports Park, Deokjin-dong, Jeonju-si.

Unlike the other counting tables in the counting center, which were filled with only the sound of ballots being passed, the counting staff in the mail-in voting department were listening to training on using the sorting machine, leaving the ballots taken out of the envelopes on the table with a very serious attitude.

Boxes had already been opened and sorted at other tables a while ago, but the postal department was only now starting to sort, so it was late.

This is because, unlike other general vote counting departments where all you have to do is take out the paper from the ballot box and sort the district and proportional representation ballots, the postal voting department took more time because the process of opening the mailing envelope, taking out the paper, and sorting the paper was added.

An official from the National Election Commission explained, “Opening mail-in ballots is a more complicated process and requires more work, so it takes about twice as much time and labor as separating ballots contained in a regular ballot box.”
