Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich declares war on competition after historic Bundesliga win

With the 5-0 win against Werder Bremen, Bayer Leverkusen sealed the first German championship in the club’s history. According to Robert Andrich, this year’s triumph was just the beginning.

In many ways it is a historic event that Bayer Leverkusen achieved on Sunday evening. Not only did the Werkself seal the first German championship in the club’s history with a clear win against Werder Bremen, but they also did so in an impressive manner: never before has a Bundesliga team remained unbeaten in the first 29 match days – and scored so many points in that period like the Rhinelanders (79).

With the triumph, the Werkself also ended the championship streak of FC Bayern Munich, which has been going on since 2013. For a decade, they had always finished at the top of the table at the end of the season – and can now only finish as runners-up. Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich took the fact that there was a not insignificant proportion of young spectators in the Bundesliga audience who, until Sunday, only knew the record champions as title holders, to make an announcement to the competition.

“If you’ve only seen Bayern: There’s not just Bayern Munich, there’s also Bayer Leverkusen. Now it’s Bayer Leverkusen time,” said the 29-year-old midfielder with a wink DAZNmicrophone and added: “Now you finally have a good German champion.”

A symbol for the young audience

Teammate Jonas Hofmann struck a much more conciliatory tone, seeing the triumph as a positive sign for the young audience. Leverkusen’s championship is a sign “that others can do it too. That you can achieve a lot with hard work. That’s also a message to young kids that you always believe in yourself.”
