Championship title not a first for Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen: Does football follow the handball players?

Bundesliga soccer team Bayer Leverkusen can become German champions for the first time this Sunday. However, the outsourced GmbH of the football department is a latecomer within the parent club TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen eV – the handball players, for example, have already won the championship title.

Bayer Leverkusen has been represented in the sports of boxing, fistball, fencing, handball, judo, athletics, triathlon, gymnastics and volleyball for decades and has produced world-class athletes.

Greats like the track and field athletes Heide Rosendahl and Ulrike Meyfarth became Olympic champions. In the recent past, Felix Sturm, Konstanze Klosterhalfen and Mateusz Przybylko represented the club.

Leverkusen also celebrated success in team sports such as handball. An overview of Leverkusen’s championship titles in team sports:

HANDBALL:
Between 1965 and 1987, the “Werkselve” won the championship title twelve times – between 1982 and 1987 even six in a row. The Leverkusen women are the record champions of the German Handball Association. The all-German record champion is HC Leipzig (23 titles) thanks to several successes in what was then the GDR.
Handball champions in the hall: 1965, 1966, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and on the field: 1973.

BASKETBALL:
With 14 championship titles, the Bayer Giants Leverkusen are the German record champions, ahead of Alba Berlin (eleven titles). They achieved their successes between 1970 and 1996 – including seven titles in a row between 1990 and 1996. The Giants, who achieved their successes under different club names, are currently only represented in the third highest division.

FISTBALL:
The Leverkusen fistball players triumphed in the fight for the German championship in 1982. Under the leadership of coach Fritz Braschoß, the title was won with a 22:18 victory over Siemens Nuremberg. Despite numerous international successes, the men never won the national title.

VOLLEYBALL:
Just ten years after they were founded in 1969, the Leverkusen volleyball team won their first championship. Two more titles followed in 1989 and 1990. In 1991 the men’s team was transferred to SV Bayer Wuppertal. The women never won a title and now play in the 2nd Bundesliga.
