Bavarians Seek Redemption in BBL After EuroLeague Disappointment

Disappointed Bavarians are dangerous Bavarians!

This is not what FC Bayern basketball boss Marko Pesic (47) imagined: With Star-Coach Paul Laso (56), NBA champ Serge Ibaka (34), three world champions and a strengthened squad once again not making it to the finals in the EuroLeague. Bayern started the season in late summer with what was nominally the strongest squad in history – and still didn’t make it into the top eight teams in Europe.

“I am very disappointed that the team showed to reach the Playins. For me it is the season of missed opportunities in the EuroLeague,” says Pesic.

Many games were narrowly lost, and injuries repeatedly weakened the team, such as the long absence of captain Vladimir Lucic (34). The premier class ends for Munich on Friday in Monaco (8.30 p.m., live Magenta TV).

“Now we have to become champions,” says Pesic. Because: “There is no substitute for experiences of success. Titles are so important for the development of the team.”

The announcement is clear: only with the double will there be a conciliatory end to the season.

“If we become champions, my conclusion about the season will be very good. After all, we are all here to win titles,” emphasizes Pesic.

Bayern already won the cup at the beginning of the year, and now the championship cup should finally go to Munich again after 2019.

The BBL has to dress warmly

And that’s exactly what makes Bayern so dangerous now. Because: The double burden is gone, the focus is 100 percent on the easycredit league. No more long trips, no more double game day weeks, more regeneration and, above all, more training sessions.

“The next few weeks are the perfect preparation for the playoffs. It is extremely important to defend first place in the table,” says Pesic. On the one hand, Bayern then have home advantage, on the other hand, they only meet their supposedly strongest competitors – currently Chemnitz, Alba and Würzburg – in the semi-finals.

There is already a foretaste on Sunday (6.30 p.m., live on DYN and WELT TV): Pablo Laso and the team have to go on the court in Würzburg. “They are playing a mega season, their coach, Sašo Filipovski, is doing an incredibly good one Job,” says Pesic.

But Bayern’s motto for the next few weeks is clear: “Every win on the way to the playoffs is important for your psyche and self-confidence,” says coach Pablo Laso.

The weaknesses in the premier class cannot be seen in the league: 22 wins, only four defeats. And every victory shows the competition: Bayern’s greed for the championship is greater than ever.
