Bart Verhaeghe’s Controversial Monologue: Minimizing the Role of the Coach at Club Brugge

Bart Verhaeghe’s monologue after the victory against PAOK continues to talk about things. In Extra Time they also looked in amazement at the chairman of Club Brugge, who made some striking statements about being a coach at his Club. Ronny Deila also had to believe it again. “Very unnecessary and indecent to repeat like that again,” Youri Mulder shook his head.

“What kind of idiot are you when you say something like that?”

After a period of silence, the floodgates at Bart Verhaeghe opened completely again.

And that resulted in a striking interview. In the euphoria of winning the European away match against PAOK Saloniki – and seeing his reborn Club Brugge in the back of his mind – chairman Verhaeghe wanted to clarify a few things again.

In that cascade of talk, two passages stood out:

1. How he minimized the role of the trainer at Club:

“Our organization is so strong that a trainer should only concern himself with the matters for which he was hired. We ask the trainer to win the next match, but he should not concern himself with whether the players are in good condition, how They eat, sleep, drink… We all do that.”

2. And the jab at former trainer Ronny Deila also caught the eye:

“I have always believed in the quality of the core, but we just felt that not enough was done with it. I think we were too strong for the previous trainer.”

Showy behavior

In Extra Time they watched Verhaeghe’s monologue in amazement.

“Although it is not new, of course,” says Gert Verheyen. “He has previously communicated that a trainer is no longer so important, but the structure in which he is allowed to work is.”

“But believe me: from my experience I can tell you that a trainer is indeed important for players. The person who stands in front of you and what qualities he or she has is still crucial.”

“It is therefore far too easy to say: we simply expect a trainer to win the next match. Yes, then there will never be a good trainer again. Every team has highs and lows, even if you have The best core, so to speak. Although that is also said very quickly, of course.”

If you think so highly of the professionalism of your own organization, then this is a very unprofessional action.

Youri Mulder in Extra Time

Although the panel considers the choice of Nicky Hayen to be the right one – given the turnaround in results at Club – Verhaeghe’s way of communicating still raises questions. Also the way he still talks about Ronny Deila.

Especially with Youri Mulder: “It is very unnecessary and indecent that he still bashes his previous trainer – who they appointed themselves, right?”

“If you think so highly of the professionalism of your own organization, then this is a very unprofessional action. Every trainer who comes to Club will also think: what kind of man is that?”

“He speaks like a toddler at that moment. What kind of brat are you if you think so highly of yourself? That’s very annoying, I think. As if Club Brugge has the best organization in the whole world.”

Gert Verheyen: “At a certain point you have to be able to admit that it is not you – from the stands – who win the match, but the players on the field.”

“Of course you have to put them in the most comfortable position to perform, but they are not machines, are they? They are just people after all.”
