Badosa Gains Confidence with Hard-Fought Win at Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

“It was very hard. I need more matches to gain confidence. I was really nervous. She played well, I’m glad I won,” said Badosa after she got her fifth match point after 1:40 hours had transformed, in the on-court interview.

In a game that was disjointed due to many errors, especially in the first set (33 unforced errors; 21 Shnaider, 12 Badosa), the former number two in the world presented herself with strong nerves in the crucial moments. Badosa fended off all eight break points, which was ultimately the key to success against her risk-taking opponent (23 winners – Badosa 15).

When asked whether she knew how many break points she had fended off in total, Badosa replied: “I know that, but I also know how many double faults I made.” In total there were ten pieces (with four aces).

The Spaniard, who has repeatedly been set back by injuries in the recent past and missed large parts of last season due to back problems, was not entirely satisfied.

Badosa raves about the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

“If I play more matches, the self-confidence will come back. I’m very impatient, I have to learn that,” she explained and finally addressed a few words of praise to the audience in Stuttgart: “It’s great to be back. I I love playing here. It’s one of my favorite tournaments, we players feel really comfortable.”

Also in the second round is Sachia Vickery (USA), who defeated Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7:6 (7:2), 7:5 in the duel of the qualifiers. In the evening, Veronika Kudermetova also beat former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova 5:7, 6:4, 6:4.

The Russian will now face the 2022 Wimbledon winner, Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan), in round two, who initially had a bye.
