Austrian Legionnaires Shine in Bundesliga Matches: Sabitzer Leads Dortmund to Victory, Mwene Scores for Mainz

In Mönchengladbach, Sabitzer gave the guests the lead with a powerful finish (22nd) and increased the score with a penalty (28th). After the break, the Styrian scored again from the spot, but the penalty was not given until after that. With a perfect header from a corner, Maximilian Wöber shortened the score for the home team (36th), who played in the majority from the 55th minute. Former Salzburg player Karim Adeyemi had previously been sent off with a yellow-red card.

And ÖFB team player Mwene also scored a goal, the defender made it 2-1 in Mainz’s 4-1 home win against TSG Hoffenheim with a deflected shot from the edge of the penalty area (51′). Karim Onisiwo, who retired from the ÖFB team, also scored (88th).

Third Sabitzer goal denied

In Mönchengladbach, the Austrian legionnaires made an early appearance. Sabitzer scored with a powerful left-footed shot to give the guests from Dortmund the lead (22nd) and added six minutes later from the spot via a penalty kick. The answer on the other hand came from Wöber, who scored the goal with a header after a corner (36′).

In the second half, Sabitzer scored again via a penalty (50th), but the penalty was taken back by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) because Gladbach keeper Jonas Omlin had played the ball first before clearing Karim Adeyemi in the penalty area.

Shortly afterwards, the ex-Salzburg striker was sent off with a yellow-red card after a foul on ÖFB winger Stefan Lainer (55′). The Dortmund team then defended their narrow lead and remain fifth with 56 points, tied behind RB Leipzig.

The Saxons defeated VfL Wolfsburg 3-0. Dani Olmo after preparatory work by Xaver Schlager (13th), Benjamin Sesko (68th) and Lois Openda secured three points for coach Marco Rose’s team. Schlager was substituted for Nicolas Seiwald after 75 minutes. The third Leipzig ÖFB man, Christoph Baumgartner, was also allowed to play the final quarter of an hour. For Wolfsburg coach Ralph Hasenhüttl it was the second defeat in the third game since he was hired; Pavao Pervan was in the VfL goal.

Bayern postpones Bayer’s championship celebration

Record champions Bayern needed goals from Raphael Guerreiro (65′) and Thomas Müller (93′) to collect three points against Cologne. The downside was a serious injury to offensive player Kingsley Coman. Konrad Laimer came on as a substitute after 79 minutes for Munich, while Dejan Ljubicic played through for Cologne and Florian Kainz played for 54 minutes. Bayern are in second place with 63 points, Bayer Leverkusen can secure their first championship with a win against Bremen on Sunday.

The Cologne “Billy Billy Goats” are penultimate with 22 points, four points behind the relegation place. This is held by Mainz, who celebrated an important victory in the relegation battle against Hoffenheim. With a furious second half, Mainz turned a 0-1 half-time deficit into 4-1. Mwene got on the top scorer’s list with a deflected long-range shot (51′), as did substitute Onisiwo (88′), who prevailed in a duel against Hoffenheim’s ÖFB colleague Florian Grillitsch.

Bochum, which drew 1-1 against Heidenheim under new coach Heiko Butscher, is only one point ahead of Mainz. Kevin Stöger prepared Keven Schlotterbeck’s equalizer (90th) with a corner. Nine minutes earlier, Schlotterbeck had demonstrated his dangerousness in front of his own goal and put the guests from Heidenheim in the lead with an own goal.
