Austria beats Denmark at the start of the BJK Cup

The Europe-Africa Zone I tournament of the Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup in Oeiras in Portugal has started successfully for Austria’s tennis players. The ÖTV women beat Denmark 2-1 on Monday.

Sinja Kraus gave the Austrians the lead with a surprising win over Caroline Wozniacki. The former world number one gave up due to illness when the score was 0:6 0:1. In the second singles, Julia Grabher had to admit defeat to Clara Tauson with 2:6 3:6. In the decisive doubles, Kraus and Melanie Klaffner prevailed against Rebecca Munk Mortensen and Johanne Christine Svendsen 6:3 7:5.

Austria still faces Hungary and Bulgaria in Group A. After the three games in one of the three groups of four, the game continues in four groups of three. The top three have already secured promotion to the play-off for the qualifying round for the 2025 BJK Cup Finals, while the three runners-up have secured another ticket.
