Australian Tennis Star Storm Hunter Suffers Achilles Tendon Rupture, Will Miss Olympics

Kateřina Siniaková’s doubles teammate, Australian Storm Hunter, ruptured her Achilles tendon and will be out for several months. The twenty-nine-year-old doubles specialist will, among other things, lose the Olympic Games in Paris, where she had a chance for a medal.

Hunter, who finished last year as world number one in doubles and is currently enjoying her best season in singles, was injured in training ahead of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Mexico in Brisbane. According to Reuters, she will be out for at least four to six months, which could mean the entire rest of the season.

“Yesterday I fell during the last training session before the match and the examination unfortunately confirmed that I had torn my Achilles tendon,” Hunter wrote on Instagram today. “I’m devastated and heartbroken, but I’m extremely grateful to be with the team. I know I have great people around me to help me get back on the court as soon as possible.” added the 3rd player in the doubles and 116th singles ranking.

Siniaková already played doubles with Hunter in previous years at tournaments where her then traditional partner Barbora Krejčíková was not present. After the breakup of the successful Czech couple at the end of last season, Siniaková and Hunter joined forces permanently and, among other things, won the February tournament in Dubai and advanced to the finals in Indian Wells. The Czech tennis player withdrew from Miami due to a hip injury.
