ATP Tour Shifts to Clay Courts in Europe: Thiem Faces Cazaux, Ofner Takes on Evans at Rolex Monte Carlo Masters

After the Sunshine Double in the USA, the ATP tour returns to the clay courts in Europe.

The third ATP Masters of the season is scheduled to kick off in Monte Carlo next week. This year, unlike last year, Dominic Thiem did not receive a wildcard for the main field and has to go through the qualification that begins on Saturday.

In the first round, the Lichtenwörther native will face the French youngster Arthur Cazaux in the third game on Saturday after 11:00 a.m. on Court Ranier III. The only 21-year-old is currently ranked 74th in the world rankings, around 25 positions ahead of Thiem. Cazaux caused a shocking moment just two weeks ago in qualifying for the Masters in Miami when the Frenchman collapsed on the court in the third set and then had to retire (read here>>>).

The winner of the encounter will meet the winner of the Italian duel Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 61st) against Fabio Fognini (ATP 100th) in the qualifying final on Sunday.

Feasible opening hurdle for Sebastian Ofner

Austria’s tennis number one Sebastian Ofner has already qualified for the main competition starting on Sunday and will face Briton Daniel Evans (ATP 42nd) in the first round.

Like Ofner, the 33-year-old is currently in a slump in form. Evans has only won two of his last ten games. It is the first duel between the two. If Ofner overcomes the opening hurdle, there would be a duel with Alexander Zverev in the second round.

Ofner only lost on Thursday in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 in Marrakesh after a bye at the start in a tie-breaker against the Australian Vukic (match report>>>)
