Athletics: Kenyan dominance in the London Marathon – Other Sports

Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir won the London Marathon, with a record time of 2h16’16” for a race reserved exclusively for women, while Alexander Mutiso, also Kenyan, won the men’s race in 2h4’01” .

Jepchirchir preceded the favorite of the day before, the Ethiopian Tigst Assefa and her compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei at the finish line. The women’s record for the London marathon still belongs to the British Paula Radcliffe (2h15’25”), achieved in a mixed race in 2003.

Mutiso paid homage at the finish line to his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum, winner of the last edition and who died last February in a road accident. His face was displayed in black and white on giant screens and attendees applauded for thirty seconds in his memory before departing. ‘May he rest in peace,’ declared Mutiso from the podium, where the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, second, and the British Emile Cairess also climbed.
