Ernesto Valverde: “It’s an evening we will always remember”
The Athletic Club coach spoke at a press conference after winning the Copa del Rey against Mallorca, in a final which was decided on penalties.
Ernesto Valverde was understandably happy after his team’s victory over Mallorca. “You never think about what such a celebration can be like. It’s wonderful, knowing that we had to suffer and that it was very difficult. I know what it’s like to lose on penalties and I know that the others must be very affected. Today (Saturday) we smiled after a long match. We are happy for everyone who came here.”
As for his analysis of the match, the former Barcelona manager said: “They started well and we struggled to get into the game. As the first half went on we felt better and in the second half time we tried everything. The goal from Oihan (Sancet) made us realize that we had the game in hand and we pressed. In the end we were all exhausted, in extra time we thought we could win and We ended up on penalties.”
Valverde praised Julen Agirrezabala’s performance and explained why this victory was so important for the club.
“Our goalkeeper played well, we played well and we were able to have an evening that we will always remember. The meaning of this victory for the club is the same as for the supporters, because we are one. team is ready to party. It took us 40 years to get here,” he said.
Athletic, which occupies second place in the list of the most successful clubs in the history of the Copa del Rey, ended its long drought.
“This title is not equaled by any other, and it is something special because of the length of our quest, the finals we lost, what the Cup represents for Athletic,” Valverde said .
