Assistant Coaches Marco Kurth and Alexander Zickler to Take Charge in RB Leipzig’s Match as Head Coach Marco Rose Serves Suspension

In RB Leipzig’s guest game at 1. FC Heidenheim, coach Marco Rose (47) will not be coaching on the sidelines due to a yellow card suspension. According to kicker information, the assistant coaches Marco Kurth (45) and Alexander Zickler (50) will take over the role together.

Rose has a long-standing relationship of trust with both assistants; he has been working with Zickler since 2017. The former national player was initially his assistant coach at Red Bull Salzburg and later also at Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund and is currently primarily responsible for the set pieces.

Zickler has already stepped in twice

He has already stepped in for his boss on the touchline twice because Rose had to serve a suspension. On September 12, 2020, he had an easy time when he dutifully led Mönchengladbach into the second round of the DFB Cup with an 8-0 win at SV Oberneuland. On December 11, 2021, Dortmund drew 1-1 at VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga. At the end of the season, the entire coaching staff in Dortmund was dismissed, and after Rose was hired at RB Leipzig three months later, it was natural for the coach to rely on Zickler’s support again.

Rose and Kurth with a shared past

He also appointed Kurth to his coaching staff, whom he met when he was a young professional and with whom he had since developed a friendly relationship. Both started their professional careers at VfB Leipzig between 1997 and 2000, which later took Rose via Hanover to Mainz and Kurth via Aue to Cottbus.

After the end of his active career at 1. FC Magdeburg, the former midfielder acquired his football coach’s license in 2017 and moved to the youth coaching staff at RB Leipzig. In 2021, after Jesse Marsch was hired, he and Achim Beierlorzer joined the professionals as assistant coaches. However, the American’s era was short-lived and was ended prematurely in December 2021 due to failure. The final straw was a 1-2 defeat at Union Berlin on December 3, 2021.

Because Marsch and Beierlorzer were out due to COVID-19 infections, Kurth was the responsible coach on the sidelines in this game. After Marsch was fired, Kurth was initially released from RB and brought back with Rose’s commitment.

On Saturday, Rose received his fourth yellow card of the current season from referee Christian Dingert in injury time at VfL Wolfsburg (3-0) because he had complained too violently about an – unjustified – yellow card against Xavi for an alleged swallow. He therefore has to stay away from the team in Heidenheim 30 minutes before kick-off and until 30 minutes after the end of the game and will instead watch the game from a stand.
