It had become apparent, but now it comes like an ice-cold shower for the ice hockey fans in Phoenix: The Arizona Coyotes have to break up their tents in the summer and the NHL license is moving to Utah.

The decision-makers of the North American ice hockey league NHL have approved the Coyotes’ move to the US state of Utah. This will become more noticeable from the coming season. The league announced this on Thursday.

The Utah team is now owned by Smith Entertainment Group, the parent company of the NBA team Utah Jazz. “As everyone knows, Utah is a vibrant and thriving state and we are excited to be a part of it,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

This marks the end of an ice hockey era in Arizona that was recently marked by sporting failures, financial turbulence and a vain search for an NHL-worthy arena. Last season just ended without making the playoffs.
