Disappointment. Andrey Rublev, who in 2023 conquered the land of Monte-Carlo, was eliminated in the second round of the current edition by the Australian Alexei Popyrin, 6-4 and 6-4.

The Russian, seeded sixth, did not lift the bad streak he has been going through in the last month in the Principality, after losing quickly in Indian Wells against the Czech Jiri Lehecka and in his debut in Miami against Tomas Machac, of the same nationality.

The sixth player in the world had fewer winning points – only 17, compared to Popyrin’s 25 – and above all he failed on break points: he missed five out of six.

Popyrin’s next rival in this Masters 1,000 will be his compatriot Alex de Miñaur, 11th seed, who defeated the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor, 2-6, 6-2 and 6-3.
