Allen Iverson Honored with Statue in Philadelphia

In Philadelphia, one of the most iconic players in the history of the franchise was honored this Friday, April 12. Allen Iverson, who wore the blue and white tunic between 1996 and 2007 (and briefly in 2009-10), discovered a statue of him in front of the training center.

Things only seem more normal since yesterday. One of the most influential athletes of his generation, and symbol of the Sixers of the 2000s, has his own statue. She immortalizes the famous crossover of The Answer, represented with her famous headband covering her braids.

Accompanied by members of his family, he lifted the sheet which covered the work to the applause of the journalists and personalities of the franchise present.

Shortly after, at a press conference, Allen Iverson did not hide his emotion at being honored in this way:

“It’s such an honor, and I don’t even feel like it’s real. I’m not usually very nervous, but seeing so many people that I love here… I just want to say all the right things and I just want you to know that I appreciate you all.”

“When you think about that statue outside, it’s a representation of everyone who has helped me, everyone who has played a role in my development and in my life.”

His 19,931 points make him the second scorer in franchise history behind Hal Greer (21,586), while the 2000-01 season and Playoffs propelled him into legend in Philadelphia. If he was unable to defeat Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant in the Finals, his scoring performances and his dribbling have enchanted more than one generation, in Philly as elsewhere.

This is the tenth statue on the franchise’s “Legends Walk”. Iverson joins Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Billy Cunningham, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Maurice Cheeks, Hal Greer, Bobby Jones and Dolph Schayes.
