Alimerka Oviedo Baloncesto went out to the Pumarín field to do what they had to do: apply themselves in defense to carry out a key match against Cáceres in their fight to remain in the LEB Oro. Through energy, activity , of a lot of hands preventing Cáceres from being able to circulate the ball fluently, little by little they undermined the morale of a team that arrived in Oviedo with few options to save the category and left with almost none, except for a miracle.
The Extremadurans were successful in the first quarter, going 6 out of 7 in triples, which kept the score balanced (21-21), although the Oviedo team showed signs that they did have the day today. In the second, they dried up a Cáceres who was no longer getting in so easily and waited for Horton’s enormous talent to appear to break the game. But that talent was able to appear because meanwhile players of the generosity of Cosialls and Hugo López allowed it. Horton’s scoring surge was joined by a huge Mikel Sanz and with his triple the game went into halftime with an important advantage (46-34).
It was a day to enjoy, to leave behind so many wasted opportunities, to not have a bad time and join a crowd that pushed them throughout the match. Horton was released, Lobaco, Stuckman and Josep Pérez joined him. The Asturian team’s three-point success was crazy (they finished with 18 three-pointers in 31 attempts). Together they stretched the income, overcoming the resistance of a Cáceres that was increasingly thinking about a very hard season for them. The team coached by Mierense Arturo Álvarez, a Spanish basketball legend, has not had any luck in this final stretch to get a victory that he had close to and that would have allowed him to fight until the end for salvation. But in Pumarín, at the end of the third quarter, the game was practically a foregone conclusion (74-53).
The last one served to live a new experience this season, an OCB game without agonizing suffering. What is not new is witnessing some genius from Horton, a player who, despite the mistakes he may make when handling the ball, has enormous quality. His points have been important so that now, with four games left, the OCB has a long way to go to maintain the category. In reality, this objective, more complicated than it may seem, is the merit of a group that has known how to not lose focus in difficult moments, in which they have let juicy loot slip away. They are where they are on their own merits and they still have four days left to finish the job, enjoy themselves and show that they are capable of beating anyone.
