Alexander Zverev showed morale against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but without a happy ending.
In the second set of the round of 16 against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev completely lost control of the match. When the score was 0:5, the 26-year-old fended off two match points and then equalized the set again. The final comeback did not materialize, but this phase was intended to encourage many critics and Zverev himself.
The morale that the German showed in an absolutely hopeless situation can be seen as clearly positive. The game got significantly better at this point. Zverev stood closer to the baseline, acted more offensively and made things more difficult for his opponent.
Zverev pulls himself out of a mental hole
The fact that the set and thus the match were lost in the end was certainly due to the performance at the beginning of the second set. However, having pulled himself out of that mental hole should retroactively give Alexander Zverev a lot of confidence. Because the road to the final comeback wasn’t long.
Here is the men’s individual tableau
