Alex Lanier Shines in European Badminton Championships, Advances to Quarterfinals

The day after a convincing success against his compatriot Christo Popov (20th in the world and French No. 1, 21-17, 21-19), Alex Lanier (48th) confirmed this Thursday evening his current very good disposition by dominating the German Fabian Roth (86th, 23-21, 21- 11). In Saarbrücken, Roth was the last German representative in the running but despite the support of the public and a set point in the initial round, he could only note the superiority of the Norman.

So here is the 19-year-old Divais, promised for many years a great future, in the quarter-final of the European Championships. Alex Lanier will challenge the Finn Joakim Oldorff (68th) this Friday, with the hope of reaching the last four.

Earlier in the day, two other French people had managed to qualify for the quarter-finals: Toma Junior Popov, winner of the Dutchman Kweekel (17-21, 21-16, 21-14), and Arnaud Merkle, winner of the Irish Nguyen (21-15, 21-18). Friday, Toma Junior Popov will challenge Azeri Dwicahyo, Arnaud Merkle, Dane Antonsen.

Eliminated as soon as he entered the fray, Christo Popov remains, for the moment, in a position to compete in the Paris Olympic Games, where France will only be able to field one player in singles. His brother Toma Junior would go before him in the race in the event of his presence in the final during these European Championships.
