Alessandro De Marchi wins the 2nd stage of the Tour des Alpes, Tobias Foss remains overall leader

Starting with today’s breakaway, the Italian Alessandro De Marchi (Team Jayco AlUla) won solo this Tuesday in Stans, finish of the 2nd stage of the Tour of the Alps. Present in a group of five breakaways with, among others, Patrick Gamper and Simon Pellaud, De Marchi first saw the rider from Bora-Hansgrohe take the lead of the race on the descent from Tulfes.

Accompanied by Pellaud, De Marchi took over the Austrian before going on the offensive in the last difficulty of the day 19 km from the finish, breaking away from Gamper and Pellaud to head alone towards the finish in Stans.

The Italian climber took advantage of the management of Ineos, the team of leader Tobias Foss, who recovered 30 km from the finish, once assured that the Norwegian would keep the leader’s jersey, thus allowing the escaped from going to the end of the stage. Well placed in the peloton at the finish, the French Tom Donnenwirth and Romain Bardet finished in 9th and 10th place.

Seventh career victory for De Marchi

Three years after winning the Trois Vallées Varésines, De Marchi was once again able to celebrate a victory. At 37, the Team Jayco AlUla rider recorded a seventh victory on his record. In the 2010s, he notably won three stages in the Vuelta.

The third stage will start from Schwaz and arrive in the same city after completing a 125 km course with two second category climbs in the last 30 kilometers. The rest of the Tour des Alpes can be followed live on the L’Équipe channel.
