The start of the clay court season has been delayed for Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old had to cancel his start at the ATP 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo at short notice, as he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
“I tried until the last minute to recover from an injury to my right arm, but it was not possible,” wrote Alcaraz, who would have played in the opener against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime after a bye in round one. For Alcaraz, Lorenzo Sonego (ITA) slides into the peloton as a “lucky loser”.
I have been working in Monte Carlo and trying to recover until the last minute from an injured pronator teres in my right arm, but it was not possible and I cannot play! 🥲 I was really looking forward to playing… See you next year! @ROLEXMCMASTERS @atptour pic.twitter.com/hQ8ANcAxPI

Wimbledon winner Alcaraz is currently third in the world rankings behind the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the Italian Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz was unable to take part in the tournament last year. On the way to the French Open in Paris, there are further 1000 tournaments on the program in Madrid and Rome. It was only in March that Alcaraz secured the hard court title in Indian Wells.
