VIVA – Philippe Troussier is no longer the coach of the Vietnam National Team. He was fired after being defeated by the Indonesian national team 0-3 in the 2026 World Cup qualifying match in the Asian zone at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, March 26 2024.

After being fired, the French coach revealed the shortcomings of the Vietnam squad which some time ago was the team he managed. He assessed that Vietnam only had two players who met the criteria.

“I think a strong team must have good individuals. The players must meet the criteria for physical fitness, technique and playing mindset. In the Vietnam team there are only two people who fulfill it,” said Troussier, reported by Thethao247.

“The top players are Hoang Duc and Bui Hoang Viet Nah. I think they have the ability to play top European football. But unfortunately, the Vietnam national team no longer has players at that level,” he added.

Furthermore, the former coach of the Japanese and Qatar national teams compared Vietnam with the Indonesian national team. According to him, the Garuda squad has a number of top class players.

“There are players with good football ability like Tuan Tai, Thai Son or Dinh Bac, but they are too small and lack football experience,” said Troussier.

“In contrast, the Indonesian national team has 20 top class players. If we had 20 Hoang Duc or Viet Anh, the Vietnam team could definitely participate in the World Cup,” he said.
