Adrien Trebel Opens Up About his Failed Adventure at Charleroi and Plans for the Future

This is undoubtedly one of the misunderstandings of the season. When Adrien Trebel signed for Charleroi last summer, we said that the alchemy with the Zebras would work. Because, during his brief adventure in Anderlecht, Felice Mazzù had revived the Frenchman. And that the latter would be hungry for football after his last painful years in the purple jersey where he was systematically sidelined because of a golden contract.

It has not happened. After 102 minutes spread over 5 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League then weekends spent systematically in the stands, Mehdi Bayat stopped the ordeal of the native of Dreux in mid-February by terminating by mutual agreement his lease which expired next June .

For the first time since his departure from Mambourg, the man who has just celebrated his 33rd birthday analyzes this failure in Hainaut while confiding in a future where there is no question of retirement.

Adrien, what is your point of view on the end of your adventure with Charleroi?

”Our paths have separated. My contract was terminated by mutual agreement. I wish them the best. Me, I focus on my situation.”

Why weren’t you even included in the selection? There were rumors about your poor physical condition or your injuries.

”I missed around ten days of training due to a thigh strain. Otherwise, I was always on the ground. My data proves it. When we left for an internship in Turkey, I knew how to repeat intense exercise sessions twice a day.”

I missed ten days of training. Otherwise, I was always on the ground.

We don’t understand why you didn’t get your chance?

”But I don’t understand either. In life, there are things you have to try not to understand.”

Have you asked for explanations from Felice Mazzù, a coach who nevertheless trusted you at Anderlecht?

“No. I’m not someone who’s going to go to the coach’s office and ask why he’s not playing. The reality is that I didn’t have a chance. When I played, it was 10, 15 minutes here and there. It’s complicated when it’s like that, but I’ve never changed my mind. I have always worked very hard.”

Are you surprised that your former partners have to go through playdowns to ensure their continued existence?

“I don’t know. It’s a season without. Afterwards, I created a lot of affinities with Mbenza, Ilaimaharitra and Delavallée. I’m disappointed that a guy like Marco ends on such a high note after seven seasons at the club.”

So the fans’ anger is justified?

”I didn’t often appear in the selection so I went to watch the matches with an outside eye. They are top supporters even if they are bloody. Obviously, they show their dissatisfaction when things don’t go well. It’s part of the game. At Anderlecht, the fans were not kind to an icon like Kompany.”

Regarding your personal situation, will Adrien Trebel still be on the field next season?

”Adrien Trebel still wants to be a footballer next season. I’m looking for a project, but I’m not putting pressure on myself. I could have gone abroad before signing for Charleroi and I didn’t do it for my children. My priority is them. It was complicated to leave in January, because my son is at school and my daughter is at daycare. I didn’t want to destabilize them.”

Is your body still able to digest the efforts that professional football entails?

”I am not worn out. This label of fragile player follows me, but the reality is that at Anderlecht, it was not a physical problem. When someone tells you one day that they want you and then changes their mind the next day, it impacts your mind. You are not considered, so your body suffers. There, I train every day with a physical trainer to come back.”

How much does this loneliness weigh on you?

”This is a situation that I experienced in Nantes when I was 19 years old. I refused to extend and had to work alone. That didn’t stop me from doing well at Standard. I have no doubt. I feel good in my body.”

What type of project are you looking for?

”Why not help young people like I did in Anderlecht with Sambi Lokonga, Saelemaekers, Bornauw and Amuzu? These are players with whom I interact a lot and with whom I have had a lot of connections. When I felt they were ready, I told Hein (Vanhaezebrouck) that it was time to play them.”

Will this new adventure take place in Belgium?

”I am not closed to anything. If it’s here, it will be with pleasure. If it’s somewhere else, it’s somewhere else.”
