Adidas Bans Number 44 on Germany Jerseys Due to SS Symbolism

The number 44 does not appear in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s current DFB squad, but you can personalize “your” Germany jersey in the Adidas online shop, i.e. add any one-digit or two-digit number on the back and any name.

The number 44 is strikingly similar to the forbidden SS runes, the symbol of the so-called Schutzstaffel, which was the Hitler regime’s most important instrument of terror.

The organization, which is responsible for countless crimes, including those related to the Holocaust, was banned at the end of the war and classified as a criminal organization at the Nuremberg Trials. Spreading their symbols is prohibited according to Sections 86 and 86a StGB (Criminal Code).

When asked by the Bild newspaper, Adidas said on Monday: “We will block No. 44 as quickly as possible.”

Spokesman Oliver Brüggen said the sporting goods manufacturer “stands for the promotion of diversity and inclusion, and as a company we are actively committed to combating xenophobia, anti-Semitism, violence and hatred in all forms.”
