On April 15, the sky was clear and the air was clear, and the river was calm and windless. Standing at Taicang Wanfang International Terminal and looking into the distance, liners carrying cargo shuttle back and forth all the time, busy and orderly. The reporter followed Chu Feng, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and deputy shift leader of the operations department of Taicang Wanfang International Terminal Co., Ltd., to the operation site to see how the front-line terminal gantry crane (gantry crane) driver loads and unloads cargo faster and more stably. Promote domestic and international dual circulation faster and faster.

Use a tens-meter-long robotic arm to “clip a basketball

Standing on the bank of the Yangtze River and looking up, the reporter saw Chu Feng operating a steel “giant” to quickly lift logs on the ship to the shore. In the cab, every slight operation of the driver’s hand will cause the robotic arm to swing hugely.

Sitting in a 30-meter-high cockpit, manipulating a tens-meter-long robotic arm, he was as comfortable as picking up a basketball with his own hands, hoisting dozens of New Zealand logs 5.8 meters long and 30 centimeters in diameter… Chu Feng completed This whole process takes about one minute, and the average driver takes nearly two minutes. If it can reach 1 minute and 20 seconds, it is considered fast. “Faster” is due to his innovative “Wanfang door machine/shipping log operation method”.

Chu Feng teaches his colleagues his “unique skills” to improve the company’s efficiency. Take the door operator class 1 as an example. Last year, 3 of the 11 drivers in the class won rankings in Taicang municipal-level related vocational skills competitions. In the competition, the driver has to drive a 30-meter-high 450-ton door operator to pick up and transport basketballs at the fastest speed, just like an elephant picking up rice grains on the ground with its trunk, which is a great test of the driver’s skills.

In the innovation studio headed by Chu Feng, the reporter saw two models, one of which demonstrated his innovative “Wanfang Door Machine/Ship Log Operation Method”. Now, this technology has been promoted and applied in the company. Under optimal conditions, it can help the company increase the log loading and unloading volume by 900,000 cubic meters per year, which is equivalent to the total usage of construction logs in Suzhou for one and a half years.

In the studio, another model demonstrates another of Chu Feng’s innovative skills – the “Inertial Hook Stabilization Method.” While demonstrating, he explained the essence of it. The ship unloader can load cargo weighing up to 50 tons at a time, which generates a large amount of inertia during operation. The interference of inertia reduces the operating efficiency, but the opposite is true. It does not eliminate inertia, but “Cooperate” with inertia and make use of it, and the operation will be more time-saving and labor-saving. In fact, Chu Feng did not understand the theoretical knowledge, but in practice, he developed a “borrowing force” method.

There are no shortcuts to “unique skills”, only hard work. Chu Feng’s starting point was not high. In 2005, at the age of 20, he was still a stevedore. At the end of 2006, he started learning gantry operator operation from scratch, and along the way he became a national technical expert from a “rookie” in skills, and from a novice in gantry cranes to a “dual expert” in gantry cranes and ship unloaders. “Practice is the job advantage of our front-line workers. Learning in practice is the basic way for us to become talented.” Studying and innovating in practice is Chu Feng’s understanding of “craftsman spirit”. “Without diamonds, we can’t get the porcelain job. Since we have chosen an industry, we must improve our skills.”

Everyone in the team comes up with something new every day

Innovating on your own is not enough. “Bringing in innovation” is another key daily responsibility of Chu Feng. “Bringing in innovation” here is not only to lead new people to learn skills, but also to lead more people to innovate together.

“Master, rotation is taboo. I dare not operate it.” Chu Feng’s apprentice Yang Zhiqiang and others were the ones who were exposed to Chu Feng’s innovative operating methods earlier. Faced with the apprentice’s self-imprisonment, the impatient Chu Feng had quick eyesight and quick hands and observed the surroundings. After there were no safety risks, he immediately held the apprentice’s hand and started operating, “Look! Is this fast and stable?” “Think more, try more, face difficulties and don’t back down. If you give up now, you will regret it in the future. “Chu Feng often imparts the innovative essence he learned from his master to his apprentices.

The gantry crane is one of the most difficult-to-learn machines in the terminal industry, and the gantry crane driver is also a job with high safety risks. A one-second delay in operation in the cab may break the bulkhead of the cargo ship outside the cab, so there are many safety operation standards. “A qualified gantry operator is proficient in the standards, but innovation is to modify and improve the specifications with safer and more efficient operations after practice makes perfect.” Chen Meizhou, leader of the gantry operator shift of Jiangsu Taicang Wanfang International Terminal Co., Ltd., said, this The truth was taught to everyone by Chu Feng’s words and deeds.

“Innovation is the norm, and everyone in the team is creating something new every day.” The person who speaks of the rapid changes in the industry does not come from a high-tech industry, but from the traditional industry of terminal freight. Chen Meizhou is an old colleague of Chu Feng. He came to the company half a year earlier than Chu Feng. Over the past 14 years, they have witnessed the company grow from scratch and the innovative elements of Taicang Port are increasing day by day.

Chen Meizhou told reporters that when encountering a problem, Chu Feng was like “living in the door operator room”, pondering day and night, constantly trying various methods, and then teaching the methods to the apprentices in the door operator class. In this process, he also passed on to his apprentices the spirit of “try more and you must solve the problem”.

There are thirty or forty drivers in the company’s door operator team, and almost everyone can be regarded as Chu Feng’s apprentice. The innovation studio that Chu Feng participated in was named “Chu Feng’s Door Machine Operation Skills Master Studio” by the Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security in 2019. With the help of the studio, he opened the “Chu Feng Innovation Classroom”, and the door machine class presented an atmosphere of “competing technology, emphasizing safety, and striving for efficiency”.

Production issues are innovation issues

Zooming in, a busy Taicang Port comes into view. Every day, raw materials such as wood imported from the United States, Canada, Australia and other parts of the world, and high-value-added materials such as precision instruments, photovoltaic and electromechanical products exported from some cities along the Yangtze River are gathered at Taicang Port. Through river-sea combined transportation, domestic and international dual cycles are carried out in Taicang Port. This is strung together. Last year, the container throughput of Taicang Port reached 8.04 million TEUs, leading the Yangtze River for 14 consecutive years.

The huge freight throughput of Taicang Port calls for the improvement of freight capacity, but how can the traditional port industry develop new productivity according to local conditions? According to Chu Feng, who has been rooted in the front line for decades, for traditional industries, the key to developing new productivity is to “adapt measures to job conditions” and to solve immediate production efficiency problems in a down-to-earth manner.

“Problems in the production process are our innovation topics.” The innovation studio led by Chu Feng integrates “innovation” into daily life. At the beginning of the year, topics will be formulated based on the production problems in the previous stage. Then the front-line drivers and technical engineers will “cooperate”, and two or three people will form a group, and the group will focus on the topic.

In recent years, Chu Feng and his colleagues not only summarized the “inertial hook method” that improved the efficiency of wood operations by 20%, but also created the original “coiled steel unloading operation method” that increased the efficiency of coiled steel operations by 20%. Their improved method The “PTA dark cabin operation method” reduces the cargo damage rate of PTA and other tonnage bagging operations by 50%… Each innovative achievement demonstrates the power of skills and research.

Taicang Port will also have greater possibilities. At a press conference recently held by the State Council Information Office on the theme of “Promoting High-Quality Development”, Jiangsu promised to enable Taicang Port to achieve a throughput of 10 million TEUs as soon as possible and create a demonstration model for the important north wing of the Shanghai International Shipping Center and the multimodal transport in the Yangtze River Delta. of heroic words.

The transformation and development of the port cannot be separated from more front-line craftsmen like Chu Feng. Last year, a number of craftsman studios in Taicang Port District jointly established the “Artisan Star Alliance”. They work together to engage in technological innovation and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. They organize and carry out “group-style” technical research and application of scientific and technological achievements around key areas of the port industry to further inspire The innovation potential of industrial workers and improving the skill level of industrial workers.

Chu Feng believes that intelligence and greening are the inevitable paths that the port transportation industry will take in the future. Currently, he is planning to promote a new round of research projects in the innovation studio, using new technologies such as 5G, intelligent network connection, and digital twins to continuously promote the transformation and upgrading of the traditional port industry and contribute to shaping new momentum and new advantages for shipping development. .
