Jungcheng Shang had to fight for almost four hours to reach the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open

The sixth match point for Juncheng Shang was finally there: However, the young Chinese had to invest an extremely strenuous 3 hours and 59 minutes of his life in order to emerge victorious in the first round duel of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid against Corentin Moutet . In the end it was 6:7 (9), 6:2, 7:6 (10) for the 19-year-old Asian.

“On clay it is extremely physically demanding against a great player like Corentin. The level was unbelievable. Even if I had lost, I wouldn’t have been upset. It was almost a perfect match for me,” beamed Shang in the interview after the epochal game.

The two players were able to get a whopping 30 break points over the course of the match, although only six of them were successfully used. Moutet needed nine set points in the first round to get it to a dry place. There were also unplanned situations for the audience, such as the Frenchman losing his racket while serving and a point being repeated because the 25-year-old was irritated by a jet of water from the next court.

Shang, who could even move into the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time with a third-round entry, will face the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round, who had a bye at the start of the tournament as number 27.

Here is the individual tableau in Madrid.
