Hamburger SV took a fantastic lead in Fürth, but still missed out on victory. St. Pauli is now heading towards the Bundesliga. In the bottom of the table, Schalke 04 missed the breakthrough despite numerous chances.

Hamburger SV has suffered another setback in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga. One day after Fortuna Düsseldorf’s victory in Kaiserslautern, coach Steffen Baumgart’s team had to settle for a 1-1 (0-0) draw at SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Easter Sunday despite clear superiority. In the 2nd Bundesliga table, they are only one point behind in fourth place behind Fortuna, and the direct promotion position is already seven points away. St. Pauli can hardly be denied promotion after the 2:1 (1:0) against SC Paderborn.

Miro Muheim (56th minute) gave HSV the celebrated lead with a dream goal in front of 16,126 spectators. After Hamburg missed out on making it 2-0, joker Jomaine Consbruch (77th) hit back with a no less beautiful goal and the surprising equalizer. After three defeats in a row, he stopped the Franconian misery.

In the goalless first half, HSV had more possession of the ball and more shots on goal, but Fürth had the better opportunities. Armindo Sieb (7th minute) and Lukas Petkov (16th) were each invited by the Hanseatic League to make mistakes and were unable to convert them into the lead. Fürth came out of the dressing room with a visible desire to stop the series of defeats – and was almost countered. U21 national goalkeeper Jonas Urbig somehow directed the shot from András Németh, who was replacing the injured striker Robert Glatzel, over the crossbar (48th). Bakery Jatta’s header was saved by the post for the already beaten Urbig (53′).

Hamburg’s pressure continued to increase and gave them the deserved lead. Laszlo Benes returned a corner to the free-standing Muheim. The defender gave Urbig no chance with his shot from around 25 meters. Muheim scored his fifth goal of the season, making him the most dangerous defender in the 2nd Bundesliga. Nemeth missed the almost certain 2-0 win against Urbig (70th). The penalty followed from Consbruch: his shot from 30 meters hit the corner and resulted in a lucky equalizer.

Schalke misses the jump to 12th place

Meanwhile, the struggling FC Schalke missed an important home win in the fight to stay in the second division. The Revierclub drew 0-0 on Sunday with Karlsruher SC, for whom the promotion places have moved even further away thanks to their ninth draw of the season. Despite numerous chances, Schalke missed out on increasing their slim two-point lead over the relegation zone with a win in the bottom of the table.

For the controversial Schalke coach Karel Geraerts, the draw against Karlsruhe should still be enough to stay in office for the time being. Because his team showed an adequate performance: Schalke applied more pressure in a fast-paced game, fought for every ball and created several promising opportunities. Thomas Ouwejan (40th) missed the best chance when he was free-standing but failed by KSC keeper Patrick Drewes, who made several strong saves.

On the other side, Ouwejan also prevented a possible deficit after he cleared Budu Siwziwadze’s shot (8th) just before the line. Overall, it was a fast-paced game throughout the entire season with lots of penalty area scenes on both sides. Nevertheless, it ended goalless. KSC, where substitute ex-national player Lars Stindl made his comeback in the final phase after a three-month injury break, remained undefeated in the sixth second division duel with Schalke.
