2nd Bundesliga: A lot of smoke about a 0-0 draw in the derby between Braunschweig and Hanover

As of: April 15, 2024 12:01 a.m

No winner in the Lower Saxony Senderby between Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96: The duel between the eternal rivals ended 0-0 on Sunday. Football chaos repeatedly set off pyrotechnics and rioted.

The draw doesn’t really help either Eintracht or Hannover 96. The BTSV is not making any real progress in the fight to stay in the league, but is at least in the first non-relegation place. For the “Reds” the gap to third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf increased to seven points on matchday 29. The dream of promotion threatens to burst for 96 coach Stefan Leitl’s team.

96 trailers tear seat shells out of their anchorage

Even before kick-off there had been unpleasant scenes and clear announcements: 96 supporters tore seats out of their anchorage in the guest area and hurled them onto the running track – it was probably a retaliation for the actions of the BTSV supporters in the first leg. In addition, 96 fans caused the start of the game to be delayed by lighting smoke pots due to clouds of black and green smoke.

Meanwhile, the Eintracht supporters presented a martial choreography: “No mercy” was written in huge letters above the curve. When the encounter was a quarter of an hour old, there was a bang and fire there too. Bengal fires were lit, as well as rockets and very loud firecrackers. Those responsible reacted and enlarged the buffer zones in the stadium.

BTSV professionals Ivanov and Kurucay collide heads

In terms of football, things looked poor for a long time. The hosts then made things difficult for themselves: defenders Robert Ivanov and Hasan Kurucay clashed heads violently when a wide cross was thrown (22′). Both were treated but initially continued. Ivanov, however, noticed the after-effects afterwards. In the 36th minute it was an early end for the Finn, who appeared dazed as he was led off the field by two supervisors. Jannis Nikolaou replaced him.

Things got exciting for the first time in the 43rd minute: Eintracht defender Anton-Leander Donkor made sure of that – with a weak back pass. Cedric Teuchert ran the ball and stormed towards the hosts’ goal. But Kurucay cleared him with a strong tackle.

96 striker Teuchert fails because of Hoffmann

Immediately after the restart there was a bang and smoke again. Masked people in the guest block lit dozens of Bengal fires. Referee Sven Jablonski (Bremen) interrupted the game – also because the visibility conditions again did not allow a regular football game. Shortly afterwards, the Eintracht fans also lit smoke pots and firecrackers. After a four-minute break we continued.

BTSV keeper Hoffmann saves a point for the hosts

At first the game continued to plod along – but suddenly the guests had a really good chance. Teuchert shot from 14 meters on the turn, but Eintracht keeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann brilliantly parried Nicolo Tresoldi’s deflected shot (59′). In the 67th minute: once again there were firecrackers and Bengali fire in the BTSV fan block.

On the pitch, the game became more intense: Braunschweig applied pressure, but Johan Gomez didn’t hit the ball properly in a good position (70th). Soon after, a corner of his own almost backfired: But Hoffmann was there to help with a low shot from Lars Gindorf (78th) – as well as shortly afterwards with an attempt from Teuchert (82nd). On the other hand, Fabio Kaufmann was denied by 96 keeper Ron-Robert Zieler (83′).

96 supporters fire rockets at neighboring blocks

Both teams tried everything again in the final phase. There was also an impressive five minutes of added time, but no goal was scored. Instead, things went even further in the stands: 96 supporters tried to hit the neighboring blocks with rockets. The stadium announcer asked everyone sitting there to leave the stadium.
