Zach Arnett is an Ole Miss staff member

Ole Miss will hire Zach Arnett as an analyst less than four months after he was fired as coach of rival Mississippi State, 247Sports confirmed. Considering his previous three years with the Bulldogs as defensive coordinator, Arnett is very familiar with the Rebels as he crosses the lines of the Egg Bowl.

Adding Arnett gives Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin and defensive coordinator Pete Golding another experienced defensive voice on the staff as the Rebels prepare to reach the College Football Playoff in 2024. Although Arnett posted just one record of 4-6 in 2023 after his promotion. Following the death of Mike Leach in December 2022, the 37-year-old remains highly respected as a defensive mind.

Their migration to Kiffin’s staff is just the latest example of high-profile coaching crossovers within the rivalry. Arnett’s successor, Jeff Lebby, worked as Ole Miss’ offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021, matching wits directly with Arnett. The Rebels were 2-1 against Mississippi State in the three meetings spanning Arnett’s time as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator; He was fired as coach in November 2023 with two games left, including the Egg Bowl. Ole Miss beat Mississippi State 17-7 with Greg Knox as interim coach of the Bulldogs.

Arnett built his reputation as a defensive expert during nine seasons on San Diego State’s staff, including the last two as defensive coordinator, before landing the defensive coordinator job under Leach at Mississippi State.
