FC Bayern Munich would have liked to sign him, and other top clubs were also very interested in Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen. But the Spaniard wants to continue his work and the path he has chosen.

Coach Xabi Alonso has ended speculation about his future and announced he will stay at Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard confirmed this Good Friday that he will remain with the Bundesliga leaders beyond the end of the season. The 42-year-old has a contract until 2026 and was recently linked to Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC.

Alonso has been the coach at Leverkusen since October 2022; the former professional took over the team in the bottom of the table. Three titles are possible for the Werkself, who have been unbeaten so far this season. Bayer confidently leads the league with a ten point lead over Bayern. In the DFB Cup, Leverkusen will go into the semi-finals against second division team Fortuna Düsseldorf as favorites, while West Ham United will be waiting in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Bavaria’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß had previously expressed a commitment as a wish, but also almost ruled it out. It will be “very difficult, not to say probably impossible,” he said in an interview with BR24Sport. According to ESPN and Sky Sports UK, Alonso was also said to be no longer a serious candidate to succeed outgoing team manager Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC.
