Wout van Aert is a doubt for the Giro d’Italia after undergoing surgery

The Belgian cyclist Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) underwent surgery this Thursday for the multiple fractures suffered in his fall in Across Flanders, a test held this Wednesday that his teammate Matteo Jorgenson won, and is a doubt for the dispute of the Giro d’Italia, which was on his calendar.

“Wout van Aert underwent successful surgery today. The examination revealed that he suffered a broken sternum, clavicle and several ribs. It is not clear when Wout will be able to get back on the bike,” his team announced in a statement.

In it they assure that the next few weeks will be “recovery.” Therefore, it is confirmed that he will miss the spring classics such as the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the Amstel Gold Race.

“His participation in the Giro d’Italia remains uncertain. We will make a decision in the coming weeks based on his recovery,” said the Dutch team, which assures that van Aert hopes to “continue his recovery in peace.”

The Belgian suffered an accident 67 kilometers from the finish line, when he went over a gutter on the road, his bike shook, he fell immediately and caused a massive fall.
