World Figure Skating Championships: Chock and Bates dance to the world title

The US pair Madison Chock/Evan Bates defended their ice dancing title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, Canada.

After their success in the rhythm dance, the defending champions also won the free skate on Saturday (March 23, 2024) and ended up with 220.20 points ahead of the Canadian free skaters Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier (219.68) and the Italians Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri ( 216.52).

Van Rensburg and Steffan missed qualification

The German figure skaters Jennifer Janse van Rensburg and Benjamin Steffan missed qualifying for the free skate. The three-time German champions only came 22nd in the rhythm dance. Janse van Rensburg and Steffan wanted to build on their 15th place at the World Championships from the previous year in Canada. At the European Championships in January in Lithuania they finished eleventh.

Minerva-Fabienne Hase/Nikita Volodin achieved the best German World Cup result in Montreal on Thursday with bronze in pair skating. It was the first German World Cup medal in six years; Aljona Savchenko/Bruno Massot won gold in 2018.

Annika Hocke/Robert Kunkel rounded off the strong German performance in Montreal in fifth place. In the individual disciplines, Kristina Isaev and Nikita Starostin missed the finals.

Minerva-Fabienne Hase/Nikita Volodin achieved the best German World Cup result in Montreal on Thursday with bronze in pair skating. It was the first German World Cup medal in six years; Aljona Savchenko/Bruno Massot won gold in 2018.
