Winter sports: Ski aces clearly ahead of ski jumpers when it comes to prize money

Winter sports

Accounts will be settled at the end of the season. Ski jumpers fare poorly in direct comparison with alpine skiers, as is particularly evident in the example of ski jumping dominator Stefan Kraft and alpine dominator Marco Odermatt (SUI). But the gap is even bigger among the women – between Lara Gut Behrami (SUI) and the Slovenian Nika Prevc.

Like Prevc and Kraft, Gut-Behrami and Odermatt won the large crystal balls in the overall World Cup. With seven wins this season, Prevc earned 77,567 euros, while the Swiss woman, as the highest earner in women’s alpine sports, earned more than 590,200 euros with a World Cup victory.

Incidentally, the ranking among female ski jumpers is not led by Prevc, but by the Norwegian Eirin Kvandal (three wins this season) thanks to her successes in the highly prized Raw Air series. The 22-year-old earned a total of 78,071 euros – 504 more than Prevc. Third in the ranking is the Austrian Eva Pinkelnig (six wins) with 70,596 euros.

GEPA/Matic Klansek Nika Prevc won the overall ski jumping World Cup, but she only came second in the prize money ranking

In the prize money for female skiers, Cornelia Hütter (two wins) takes fifth place as the best Austrian with 245,400 euros. Second place behind Gut-Behrami goes to US star Mikaela Shiffrin with 574,000 euros, ahead of Italian Federica Brignone (497,000).

500,000 euros difference

The gap in prize money is probably best comparable between Odermatt and Kraft. Both won the overall World Cup, celebrated 13 victories this season and were on the podium seven more times in second or third place. The Swiss received 832,600 euros in prize money, Kraft “only” 383,364.

The places behind Odermatt went to Cyprien Sarrazin from France (375,700) and slalom shot winner Manuel Feller with 325,900 euros. Vincent Kriechmayr follows in sixth place with 201,100. Kraft was followed by the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi with around 347,800 and the German Andreas Wellinger with 217,850 euros. Fourth in the ranking is Jan Hörl (159,000).
