Welsh Rugby Star Louis Rees-Zammit Set to Make NFL Debut with Kansas City Chiefs

According to the British daily The Telegraph, Louis Rees-Zammit (23 years old), the international winger for Wales (42 caps since 2020, quarter-finalist of the 2023 World Cup and winner of the 2021 Six Nations Tournament), will sign a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. The player decided last January to participate in the program to integrate foreign players into the US pro league. This was held last week.

By signing with the Chiefs, winners of the Super Bowl in February, Rees-Zammit would earn the right to take part in the team’s training camp next summer, which will produce 53 players who will participate in the next NFL season. The Welshman will train alongside stars like Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City quarterback, and Travis Kelce, the tight end (Mr. Taylor Swift in town).

First team or “practice squad”?

Louis Rees-Zammit should be tested as a runner and receiver, even as a kick returner. He also reportedly had contact with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos.

If he fails to be among the 53 players who make up an NFL team, the Welsh winger could join the “practice squad”, the training team. The players who are part of it train with NFL pros during the official season but do not play matches. Christian Wade, former English winger for Racing 92, was part of the Buffalo Bills “practice squad” from 2019 to 2021.
