Violent Ultra-Attack in Israel’s Basketball League: Former Bundesliga Professionals Targeted

Until December, Deondre Burns (27) was still playing for BG Göttingen in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. Now the American in Israel had to experience how opposing ultras from Hapoel Tel Aviv violently attacked the fans of his club, Hapoel Holon!

After the end of the game there was a physical fight between both groups of fans. Several security and police officers were injured. The ultras from Tel Aviv captured a giant flag, and the fans attacked each other with, among other things, a long pole.

While the coach of the home team Hapoel Tel Aviv, Danny Franco, was doing the TV interview, the fans stormed into the visitors’ block in Holon. Luckily, Deondre Burns was already in the dressing room and was uninjured. Just like the former BBL professionals on the Tel Aviv side: Bar Timor, who played for Alba Berlin in 2013/14, and Will Cummings, who was under contract with EWE Baskets Oldenburg in 2018/19.

The action was triggered by offensive chants from Holon fans before the game during a minute’s memorial for fallen soldier Omri Shwartz, who was a Hapoel Tel Aviv fan. This is what the Israeli media reports.

Hapoel Holon issued a statement after the attack: “At the end of the game, the team’s young fans were attacked and their flag was stolen, which for some reason was portrayed in some media as a mutual brawl. The fans remaining in the stands were busy folding up the equipment, without there being any provocation or instigation that led to this brutal attack on them. Where were the security guards? Where was the large police presence? These are good questions that we want to pursue.”
